London Photography: Exploring Architecture and Festive Lights

My five-day trip to London was the perfect opportunity for some night and street photography in the festive season. From the interesting lighting in the halls of the Natural History and British Museums to the festive Christmas lights on Oxford Street, each day offered new subjects and opportunities to try different styles.

Architectural Photography in London’s Museums

My trip included visiting the Natural History Museum and the British Museum, where the architecture is as interesting as the collections. The intricate details of the museums’ exteriors and interiors offer a chance to photograph architecture in a way that isn’t available in many places in the country.

Inside, natural light filtering through large windows offered dynamic contrasts and shadows, perfect for shooting in bright, sunny conditions. This allowed me to emphasise both the grandeur and fine details of the architecture in the same photograph. On rainy days, the wet pavements reflected the building facades, adding depth and a moody atmosphere to my shots - whilst also making playing with reflections fun!

Night Photography: Christmas Lights and Leicester Square

As night fell, Oxford Street’s famous Christmas light display created a magical atmosphere and festivity. Capturing the busy energy of the crowds and London taxis and busses against the backdrop of twinkling lights required careful timing and patience, but the result was a collection of images that captured the spirit of the season.

Leicester Square was another highlight, with its Christmas market and illuminated decorations bringing festive cheer. Shooting in the evening always presents challenges, from balancing exposure in low light to managing reflections from wet surfaces, but it also allowed me to experiment with longer exposures and capture motion blur from the crowds, creating dynamic and lively compositions.

Wrapping Up the London Photography Adventure

This trip to London was such a great reminder of how much the city has to offer for photographers. From its stunning architecture to the festive buzz of Christmas lights, there was always something new and exciting to capture. Whether sunny, raining, or snowing, London is an inspiring place to shoot.
